WHY POLISH / REFURBISH GRANITE WORKTOPS

When granite worktops are first installed, many people compliment on just how shiny they are. Over time though, with normal life taking place, that shine can dull somewhat but that doesn’t mean it’s lost forever.

While we do offer granite repairs, you’ll be pleased to know, getting that shine back doesn’t require any serious action, just a simple polishing that you yourself could even do at home.

Below you’ll find a simple and easy-to-follow guide to help you have your kitchen worktops in Essex and Kent gleaming as much as the first day they were installed. We’ve even included some instructions to make your own at-home polish.

THE PROCESS OF POLISHING GRANITE WORKTOPS

1. Surfaces must be clean

It’s no use polishing your granite countertops if they aren’t clean so the first step is to make sure surfaces are clean and free from dust. Our teams always emphasise the importance of getting any sticky films or residues. Over the years we have tried all manner of cleaners for granite worktops and we have a great process. Here at The Only Way Is Granite, we use a gentle soap that does the job perfectly. We choose products that wont damage or build up residues that will dull the surface of the granite worktop.

2. APPLYING THE POLISH

Once we are happy with the cleanliness of the kitchen worktop, we are ready to start the polishing process. There are a number of granite-safe polishes on the market and we have a trust brand with a formula that provides long-lasting results. If you would prefer to polish your own worktops we highly advise people to avoid using non-granite polishes, as they can be very acidic and may permanently damage your countertop. Avoid anything that contains lemon, vinegar, lime or bleach as these ingredients will simply break down the sealant and lead to staining.

3. Buffing The Worktop

Once the polish has been worked over the surface we use our specialist granite polishing solution and buffing pads to restore the sheen and lustre that makes granite worktops so beautiful. Working in small sections means we get complete coverage of the worktop and don’t miss any areas. After buffing the worktops will look and feel like brand new worktops, but there is one final step to make sure the job will stand the test of time.

4. Resealing The Worktop

This is a crucial finishing step. Whilst we can get the desired look from buffing and polishing, once the worktops start being used for daily tasks the top layer will dull quickly if worktops are not sealed. We apply a long-lasting sealing formula to the entire worktop surface. Our process then involves spreading and working the sealant into the top layer of the granite. Once sealed the worktops will 0nce again be protected from water marks and stains, and the seal keeps the worktops in good condition for longer periods of time.
